About Us

Captain Ted R. Thomas was a dedicated leader who devoted countless hours to youth programs both in his community and across the state. The scholars referred to him as “OT”. Ted was passionate about creating opportunities for young people, especially during summer breaks and after school. His tireless efforts included close collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure that youth had access to meaningful, impactful programs that encouraged growth, discipline, and success. Ted's legacy continues to inspire all who knew him.

On behalf of the Ted R. Thomas family, we are pleased to announce a very special initiative to honor the legacy of our beloved family member, Captain Ted Thomas. He was not just a dedicated public servant; Ted was a guiding light for many young people in various communities. We hope to continue Ted's mission by awarding scholarships in his name to deserving Dougherty County graduating seniors who embody the values Ted lived by—commitment, leadership, and a dedication to positive change.

The Purpose of the Scholarships: Ted’s passion was guiding young people onto the right path. In his honor, the family has established the Captain Ted Thomas Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships will be awarded annually to one graduating senior at each high school who meets the following criteria:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Senior in good standing

  • GPA 2.5 or higher

  • Community involvement

  • Graduating from DCSS high schools:

    • Monroe Comprehensive High School

    • Westover Comprehensive High School

    • Dougherty Comprehensive High School

  • Confirmed plans to pursue higher education at an accredited college or university.

We are seeking the schools' support in identifying eligible students who would benefit from this scholarship. We also welcome any collaboration in promoting and sustaining this initiative in the years to come.

By awarding the scholarships, we aim to continue Ted’s legacy of mentorship, leadership, and service. We believe this is not just a way to remember Ted, but also a way to inspire the next generation to follow in his footsteps.

Our Mission

Choose Your Battles

Not every disagreement deserves your energy. Some things are better left alone so you can focus on what truly matters. Choosing your battles isn't about being wise. Practice self-control, when you save your energy for what's important, you protect your peace and grow stronger for the moments that really count. ("Choose Your Battles" was one of his favorite sayings.)

A Team Member

Ted understood being a Captain carried the responsibility of working as a team. He had several opportunities of working with some awesome groups of people over his long career. He knew the people he worked with could be trusted and shared similar goals in serving our community.
